Mexico announces a tariff of around 80% on some steel products exported from China to Mexico

Mexico announced on December 28th that it will impose nearly 80% tariffs on some steel imported from China. Local producers have reported that the presence of Chinese steel manufacturers has restricted their production.


According to the statement, the tariff also applies to some cold-rolled steel plates exported from Vietnam, but if these enterprises can prove that these steel plates come from countries outside of China, the tariff can be waived.

On December 4, 2023, the Argentine Ministry of Economy issued Announcement No. 1672 of 2023 in the official daily newspaper, imposing anti-dumping sanctions on zipper products originating from China, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Peru



An ad valorem tax of 117.83% FOB on Chinese zippers, and 314.29%, 279.89%, and 104% on Indian, Indonesian, and Peruvian products, respectively. The announcement shall take effect from the date of publication and be valid for 4 months.


This is not the first time Mexico has raised taxes on Chinese exports. In August, Mexico raised import tariffs on some goods from China and other countries that have not signed free trade agreements with it to 25%.


According to data released by the General Administration of Customs of China, the total amount of steel exported from China to Mexico from January to November this year was 1.276 million tons, an increase of 39.8% compared to the same period last year.
